SCAN recently held a three-day Healthy Food Fall Festival at our Johnson Cornerstone Community Center in East Harlem. Attended by over 100 NYCHA residents of all ages, the free events included healthy food and nutrition education. Working in partnership with the New York City Food Policy Center at Hunter College and the NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA), is currently conducting a pilot project to develop a plan for resident-driven initiatives to increase access to and use of fresh healthy food in NYCHA communities. Funded by The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund in partnership with United Neighborhood Houses, SCAN is partnering with NYCHA residents of all ages in a process that will identify the best strategies for future healthy food activities.
The three-day event featured:
Food Art for Families, where residents used items from the fall harvest to create beautiful works of art (presented in partnership with El Museo del Barrio);
No Cooking Cook Off, in which teams of children and their parents compete to make the tastiest fruit and veggie salads (presented in partnership with Red Rabbit); and
STAND UP! The Fight for Healthy Food in East Harlem, an interactive workshop engaged teens in creating campaigns to help protect children and families from fast food, soda and other big companies that seek to profit at the expense of our health (presented in partnership with the New York City Food Policy Center).
